| Most people think a target market is a broad term. "Anyone who's smart enough to want to start their own business." I'm here to tell you how naive that mistake is. Not to offend anyone, because I went through this myself at the beginning of my online marketing learning curve. I just had to learn, just like you are doing now. (Smart thinking. *wink*) So let's think about this in terms of "Narrowing it Down".This world is full of people. And it's not too far fetched to think that there are thousands of people with the same circumstances in their life all at the same time. There are millions of them. I'll just use a commercial I saw on T.V. recently to illustrate my point. Glass Cleaner. This commercial is selling glass cleaner to women who are in charge of keeping their own windows clean. Glass cleaner could be for MANY target markets. Window washers, bachelors, receptionists who clean the front office, shop owners, full service car washes, etc, etc. I think you get the point. But this particular glass cleaning company is marketing directly to women in their homes. The reason this is so smart is because...Well, because the more narrow the target market, the more hearts are touched with the idea that the marketer understands their unique needs, and in turn more sales are generated. This concept is opposite of what most people think when they think of generating MORE sales. Amateurs believe that the more types of people they target all at once the more sales they'll generate. But that's just not true in any marketing campaign. When you determine your target market you should be getting inside the head and situation of the person you're talking to. And then talk to them like you know they are a human being with specific and individual needs...like the woman who washes her own windows. Try to break it down like this:- Man or Woman?
- Rich, poor, or just right?
- Busy, Lazy, or Balanced?
- And with the idea of MLM - Entrepreneur or Employee Mentality?
- Beginner or Experienced?
There are many, many other life situations to consider when determining your target market and how you want to talk to them. I like to first determine if I'm talking to someone just like me. It's easier to get an idea of who I'm talking to if I can see out of their eyes because...well, because THEY are ME. If your target market isn't like you. It's okay if you choose a target market who isn't just like you. But you've got some work cut out for you. It's not that tough though. All you need to do is decide if someone you know is your target market and then pick their brain. Ask them why they would like your product. If they went looking for it how would they start (what keywords would they put into a search engine to try to find it online.) and once they got started what would they like to read to connect with them on a personal level through your website? Don't over complicate it. There is no need to spend more than a few days narrowing down your target audience. But it has to be you who does it. You're the one who knows what kind of people you want to work with. Now it's just time to take a little bit of time to really get to know them before you start writing for them. Enjoy Your Journey!
